CÓLICA NO BEBÊ: Higiene natural e outras dicas de como aliviar!
Baby colic is defined as excessive crying that lasts more than 3 hours, more than 3 days a week, for more than 3 weeks, in a healthy baby. It usually starts after 2 weeks of life and occurs mainly at night and in the baby's first 3 months. This situation can greatly increase the level of stress in the family environment. Anyone who has been through this knows it's not easy at all! The causes are not yet fully known; there is much talk about the immaturity of the digestive system, but there is something that is not given much importance and perhaps makes a lot of sense to you as it did to me. This discomfort can be caused, at least in part, by intestinal distension due to gas and feces. If you have ever had difficulty going to the bathroom, you may have noticed that this often causes discomfort and pain. With the advent of diapers and the accelerated routine of parents, we are failing to meet one of the baby's basic needs: elimination. We put a diaper on the baby and forget about this issue. Pooping lying down or sitting in a diaper is not physiological at all. And that's where natural hygiene comes in, a practice that helps babies defecate by placing them in a squatting position, which is the most physiological for elimination. The squatting position increases the anorectal angle, favoring complete evacuation and elimination of gas. In this method, the caregiver observes the baby's rhythm and signals to know when they need to eliminate. Some of the signs may be: becoming agitated, writhing, passing gas, straining, red face, grimacing. And interestingly, these are often the same signs that precede a colic episode! If we ignore the signs that the baby needs to eliminate, it can escalate into a strong cry. We should always keep in mind that this may not be the solution for all aspects related to colic, especially since the causes are not fully understood. But natural hygiene can certainly help a lot; many parents report improvement in crying episodes. Watch my video on natural hygiene to learn how to do it and what other benefits it can bring to your baby! Besides natural hygiene, other ways to reduce colic are: • Placing the baby in contact with you, belly to belly. • Bucket bath, which simulates the intrauterine environment. In addition to the warm water, the baby is in a squatting position, which favors the elimination of gas; sometimes they even end up defecating in the bath! • Taking the baby to a calmer environment with fewer stimuli. And is the crying due to colic? The baby may be crying for another reason. Watch my video about baby crying to learn more! Follow me and don't miss any new content!
