April 24, 2026 (Friday) I finally boarded the Nippon Maru, Japan's leading cruise ship, a ship I'd always dreamed of sailing on. I'd always wanted to ride it, and then came the announcement of its retirement. I hesitated for a while, but then 12 cruises were announced as part of the Grand Finale, and I found a one-night cruise departing from and returning to Yokohama. I would have preferred a 2-3 night cruise, but my top priority was a "departure and return to Yokohama" cruise. And above all, it was "to be on the Nippon Maru." I could easily imagine that the Grand Finale Cruise would be highly competitive, so I narrowed my choices down to cruises that seemed less likely to have regular bookings (i.e., cruises with more available seats), and made my reservation as soon as general reservations opened. 📱 There's no point in being greedy and not being able to get on, haha. My hands were shaking when my strategy paid off and I secured a reservation... Three years ago, I first heard about the ship, and since then, every time I've heard about it or gone to see it off and welcome it back, my longing for a cruise has only grown. 🛳️ It's a shame that, being a one-night cruise, I only experienced a tiny fraction of what makes traveling on the Nippon Maru so wonderful... But it wasn't zero, and I'm cherishing the feeling of having experienced even a small part of the Nippon Maru journey. It's a representative Japanese cruise ship that I can no longer sail on.
