Meniscal tears are one of the most common knee injuries, causing pain, swelling, and discomfort during movement. Meniscal tears are most often caused by the accumulation of micro-trauma when your hip or foot is not working properly. Meniscal tears occur when the knee is slightly or strongly flexed and rotated. Median meniscal tears are rare because they have a high degree of mobility. The medial meniscus is connected to the collateral ligament, which makes it less mobile and more susceptible to injury. Very often, the inability to move properly—sitting, walking, standing—leads to meniscal tears. Surgery is not always the best solution. Surgery is most often performed when the knee locks frequently or when you injure multiple structures in the knee at the same time. For recovery, you should start exercising the medial head of the quadriceps femoris as soon as possible. In the case of a medial meniscus tear, it's important to prevent adhesions on the inside of the knee where the gastrocnemius muscle contacts the semitendinosus tendon. In this video, I present several important exercises for recovery from a meniscus injury.
