PIKEY-PEAK BASECAMP || THE UNSEEN SOLU || VOL-3

After two continuous days of terrible weather, I finally managed to continue my journey towards Pikey Peak. When I woke up that morning, the weather had transformed completely. It was a beautiful sunrise. The mountains glowed with golden light, while the trail ahead was blanketed in fresh snow from the storms of the previous two days. The contrast was surreal—the snow-covered landscape beneath me, the white Himalayan peaks in the distance, and heavy black clouds still hanging low on the horizon. After enjoying the sunrise over breakfast, I set off for the day's destination: Pikey Base Camp, at an elevation of 3,777 meters. It was a 14-kilometer hike. The first couple of hours were simply magical. The trail was muddy from melting snow, with patches of white still covering the ground. Rhododendrons surrounded the path in every direction. Some were bright white, others deep red, while younger blossoms displayed shades of pink, crimson, and pale white, painting the forest with different layers of color. Clouds drifted lazily through the hills, revealing and hiding the landscape every few minutes. By midday, I reached Mahaboudha Lhamuje, sitting at around 3,500 meters. Before arriving there, I stopped for pancakes and a cup of hot lemon ginger tea. I wasn't alone—Jackey, a friendly dog I met on the trail, had been hiking with me for hours. I joked that I had hired him as my guide and paid him in biscuits. Around 2 or 3 p.m., I had a plate of warm dal bhat in Lhamuje before continuing the climb. By then, the weather had started changing again. The higher I climbed, the thicker the clouds became until visibility dropped dramatically. Somewhere inside the quiet wilderness, something unexpected happened. A rare Cheer Pheasant suddenly appeared, walking down the hillside. For a few seconds, it stopped and looked directly at me. There was no one else around—just me, the pheasant, and the fog that rolled back and forth across the mountains. It felt incredibly raw, peaceful, and untouched. Moments like that are impossible to plan; they simply happen. A little farther ahead, I stopped at a tiny shelter where a 78-year-old Sherpa woman named Pemba lived alone with her cows. She welcomed me with a warm cup of milk tea. We spent some time talking, listening to her stories about life in these mountains before I thanked her and continued on my way. Soon the weather turned brutal. Strong winds, easily over 20 km/h, slammed into me from every direction. Every step uphill became exhausting. The snow grew deeper, visibility dropped to almost zero, and even a short stretch of trail felt endless. By around 5 or 6 p.m., I finally reached Pikey Base Camp. I planned to spend the night at the only hotel nearby, located about 100 meters above the base camp. But the mountains had one final surprise waiting for me. With visibility almost completely gone, I accidentally missed the uphill trail and started descending toward Jiri instead. Everything around me was white—deep snow under my feet and thick fog racing across the landscape at nearly 20 km/h. I kept walking, convinced I was on the right path, until I realized I had been losing elevation instead of climbing. That mistake cost me nearly two hours. After retracing my steps through the snow and finding the correct trail, I finally reached the hotel around 8 p.m. I couldn't help but laugh. Some days in the mountains go exactly as planned. The best ones never do.
