The Straw Mat Workshop That Became The World's Most Advanced Machine Manufacturer
Every advanced Mazak machine ships with a sensor buried in its electrical cabinet. Move the machine without permission — tilt it onto a truck, load it onto a ship — and it locks itself into a multi-million-dollar block of iron that only an encrypted password from Japan can revive. This documentary tells the story of the company that decided its own products were too dangerous to leave unguarded. Yamazaki Mazak began in Nagoya, Japan, in 1919, building machinery for weaving tatami straw mats. Founder Sadakichi Yamazaki steered the small firm into woodworking machines, then into metal-cutting lathes by 1927, building a respected machine tool company in one of Japan's most important industrial cities — right before Allied bombers reduced that city to ash. Twenty-one air raids and fourteen thousand tons of bombs devastated Nagoya's industrial base by 1945, and the company had to rebuild from a ruined economy under the founder's son, Teruyuki Yamazaki, who joined in 1946. What followed was one of the most aggressive international expansions in manufacturing history. The first Japanese machine tool export to America — two hundred lathes in a single 1962 order. The Mazak brand, created in 1963 so Western buyers could pronounce it. A New York subsidiary in 1968. And in 1974, a decision no Japanese machine tool builder had ever made: a full manufacturing plant in Florence, Kentucky, the town famous for its "Florence Y'all" water tower. Twelve years later, when the US-Japan machine tool trade war produced import quotas, that Kentucky plant made Mazak effectively immune while its competitors hit a wall. The video covers the innovations that reshaped the industry: the MAZATROL T1 of 1981, the world's first conversational CNC, which let shop-floor machinists program parts by answering plain-language questions instead of writing G-code; the first multi-tasking machine in 1983; the INTEGREX line and its "Done in One" philosophy, machines that turn, mill, and hand parts between spindles without a human touching them; lights-out factories Mazak was already running unmanned at night in 1981; PALLETECH automation; the iSMART Factory; and the Cisco-partnered SmartBox that firewalls machines on the factory floor. It also covers the vertical integration few outsiders ever see — in-house spindle manufacturing in clean rooms, an underground factory built eleven meters deep for thermal stability, in-house mineral casting, and controls co-developed with Mitsubishi Electric since 1979. And it covers the darker inheritance of building the world's best "mother machines": the 1987 Toshiba-Kongsberg scandal that put Japanese export controls on a war footing, the relocation detectors Mazak voluntarily installed on every machine from 2008 onward, and the investigations documenting how sanctioned states still hunt these machines through third-country brokers today. Four generations of one family. A private company that never sold a share. Roughly 8,700 employees, eleven plants in six countries, and around $2.1 billion in revenue — the number two machine tool builder on the planet, still headquartered down the road from where the bombs fell.
