US-Iran deal: Iran insists on right to control shipping in Strait of Hormuz after maritime attack
Iran is insisting its authority over the Strait of Hormuz must be respected, a day after a maritime attack prompted the United Nations to suspend an operation to escort vessels through the waterway. Iran's foreign ministry responded to a joint US-Gulf statement rejecting Tehran's bid to assert greater control over shipping through the strait, saying it cannot guarantee safe passage for traffic outside designated routes without coordination with authorities in Tehran.
