Gulf states welcome US-Iran deal and push for regional stability
The United Arab Emirates and Kuwait have welcomed the US‑Iran deal, expressing support for diplomatic efforts aimed at enhancing regional stability. The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed the importance of full compliance with the agreement and commended the diplomatic efforts led by US President Donald Trump. Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its support for resolving conflicts through peaceful means and called on all parties to engage in the next round of negotiations with a positive and constructive attitude. Gulf states played an important political and diplomatic role as go‑betweens between the US and Iran before and during the war. They were also caught directly in the middle militarily, with Iran targeting US assets across the Gulf region. Every Gulf country was affected, with ports, US facilities and embassies hit. For more than 100 days, residents lived under defensive fire against Iranian projectiles. The conflict shattered the region’s long‑standing sense of security. The GCC Secretary General Jasem Al‑Budaiwi expressed relief and welcomed the memorandum of understanding. All Gulf states want the Strait of Hormuz opened as soon as possible and a continuation of dialogue. The biggest impact has been on economic stability, with oil prices rising and shipping lanes choked for more than 100 days. Casualties from debris and attacks have been significant by GCC standards. Looking ahead, Gulf states will seek security guarantees with the US and Iran. Qatari mediators spent 17 hours negotiating with Iranian officials, made more difficult by the Israeli attack on Beirut. Technical talks continue to iron out details, with a signing expected on Friday. Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi reports from Doha.
