Call or Text Top 3% SFV Realtor® Julian Park, at 818-390-3265 You'll love my Instagram:   / getrealvalley   or @getrealvalley ---------- Granada Hills in one sentence: This is the North Valley's finest - you get high-end homes, beautiful architecture, nationally-recognized schools, and a robust Chatsworth St. for shopping - all without its neighboring Northridge's traffic. ---------- I’m standing on White Oak Avenue near San Fernando Mission Blvd. in Granada Hills. Did you know that the trees on this street were the back-drop for the flying bicycles scene in the film E.T.? How can you not love a tree-lined street? Especially with these robust “Deodar” (Dee-oh-dar) trees that are native to the Himalayas. This area located near the foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains, began as a dairy and orchard. Drilling the valley’s first oil well began near the northern tip of Zelzah Avenue when this area was only called Granada. Ten years later, Hills was added to the name. Granada Hills gained recognition for its modernist architecture and was shown on many commercials, TV and film. Hannah Montana, Die Hard 2, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and My Tutor are but a few of these productions. The Ronald Reagan Freeway runs past the Balboa Highlands tract, and the award-winning Knollwood Country Estates and golf course. These were built by Joseph Eichler using Mid-Century modern architecture also referred to as “California Cool.” This area is close to CSUN which is home to the Valley Performing Arts Center where you can enjoy concerts, dance and theater in a state-of-the-art venue. Granada Hills has ten private and fourteen public schools including Granada Hills Charter High. This is the campus where John Elway graduated high school. There’s also many parks in this area if you want to toss a few. On Friday, you get the true feel of the neighborhood with all the food trucks that come out. Chatsworth St is truly going to give the valley that rate urban/walking feel. And let’s not forget O’Melveny Park, the second largest park in Los Angeles. It’s a great place to picnic, jog, or take a stroll. For a more active experience, you can climb Mission Point, the highest peak in Granada Hills, a well-kept secret by residents who love a good hike and a great view. Deer, bobcats, and other critters live in these environs, so maybe don’t go after dark. The Granada Hills Recreation Center has an auditorium, baseball diamonds, and basketball courts for people who want to work out. There’s also play areas for kids, sports programs and arts activities in Petit Library. After you’ve worked up an appetite, you can dine at the Odyssey Restaurant known for its farm fresh meals. Some vegetables are picked from their garden right on the premises. You can also take in another sweeping view of the San Fernando Valley. Other popular dining options include Presto Pasta, Mercado Buenos Aires, and Je Je Mediterreanean Grill, but there are dozens more. I like the desserts and coffee at the popular hang out, Joe’s Cafe. My guilty pleasure is the Bacon Creme Brulee.
