The entry arrangements for full gypsy bookings are as follows: Kisli Zone: Entry through Khatia, Mukki, or Sarhi gates in the morning; Khatia or Mukki in the afternoon. Kanha Zone: Entry through Khatia, Mukki, or Sarhi in the morning; Khatia or Sarhi in the afternoon. Mukki Zone: Entry through Khatia or Mukki in both morning and afternoon safaris. Sarhi Zone: Entry through Khatia or Sarhi in both morning and afternoon safaris. These rules apply to full gypsy bookings and may not be applicable for single-seat bookings. Therefore, staying near Khatia Gate offers a certain advantage. However, the drawback is that Mukki Gate (55 km) and Sarhi Gate (60 km) are quite far from Khatia. So, if you stay near Khatia Gate, you may have to skip safaris from the other two gates. I visited Kanha in May. At that time, the morning safari operated from 5:30 AM to 11:30 AM, while the afternoon safari ran from 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM. During the morning safari, vehicles stop at a breakfast point where visitors eat the packed breakfast brought from their hotel. Some snacks are also available there. I stayed at the Baghira Resort operated by Madhya Pradesh Tourism. It is a very good property with spacious grounds, clean surroundings, a swimming pool, and rooms with balconies overlooking the Banjar River and the surrounding forest. The package generally includes accommodation along with three meals a day. The Barasingha – Pride of Kanha The Barasingha (swamp deer) is the state animal of Madhya Pradesh and can truly be called the pride of Kanha. Today, the species has survived largely because of the dedicated conservation efforts of Kanha’s forest officials. Around 1970, the Barasingha population had reached a critical stage, with only about 40–50 individuals remaining in the entire country, all of them in Kanha. A major conservation program was then initiated involving fenced breeding areas, habitat protection, and intensive management. As a result, the population gradually increased to around 400–500 animals. Later, some Barasinghas were relocated to other forests in Madhya Pradesh and parts of northern India. However, it is important to remember that these populations originated from Kanha. Apart from Barasingha, I also saw Indian Gaur, Spotted Deer, Sambar Deer, Peacock, Peafowl, Indian Roller, Lapwing, Spotted Owlet, and Kingfisher during my visit.
