Lake Mummelsee is fabulously beautiful. Lake Mummelsee, beautifully situated on the Black Forest High Road, is the largest of the seven remaining cirque lakes in the Black Forest. It covers 3.7 hectares, has a circumference of approximately 900 meters, is 18 meters deep, and lies at 1,036 meters above sea level. The name Mummelsee, incidentally, derives from the white water lilies, popularly known as "Mummeln." The Mummelsee Legend Lake Mummelsee, nestled in the dark pine forests, takes its mysterious name from the sea maidens or "Mummellein." They live in its unfathomable depths in a magnificent, crystal-like castle. It is surrounded by magnificent gardens where blood-red coral grows alongside fragrant water lilies. The "Mummellein" are sweet, charming creatures with delicate, slender stature and rosy beauty. Every night, they rise to the surface of the dark water, perform a lovely dance to the sound of instruments, or hurry with a spindle to the nearest houses in the valley. In the past, the mermaids often came down to the valley to the farmers and woodcutters, helped in the house and farmyard, or looked after the children while the women were busy in the fields. They were already there early in the morning. But as soon as night fell and the stars were in the sky, they all had to return to the crystal castle at the bottom of the lake. This was their king's command. One of the beautiful mermaids fell in love with a young farmer's son from Seebach. When the church fair was once again held in the valley, the mermaids came down to the inn where the dance was being held. The mermaid, who loved the farmer's son, danced one dance after another with her lover. There was no girl as beautiful as the mermaid for miles around, and none could dance as gracefully and lightly. As darkness began to grow, all the maidens from the lake returned to their crystal castle. Only the one mermaid, who had her lover in the village, could not part from him. She wanted to dance just one more dance. She thought it would get dark down there in the valley sooner than up in the forest. But she danced one more round dance and another. And time passed, and she didn't know how. Suddenly, the clock on the tower struck two o'clock. Now the mermaid became aware of her recklessness. Her heart sank. And she pulled her lover out of the hall into the open air. Silently, she hurried with him up the mountain forest. When they reached the lake, she spoke in a sad voice: "We will probably never see each other again, for I will have to die. Wait a while longer on the shore. If blood rises from the depths, I have lost my life; if not, I will soon be with you again." She took a willow branch and struck the water three times with it. Then it parted, and a marble-white staircase appeared, leading down into the crystal castle. Behind the little mouse, the water closed again. It was a dark night, and not a single wave stirred. Then a small, dark wave rose from the depths of the lake. It was the blood of the poor little mouse, who had to die for his love.
