Why Is Anime So... Weird?
Anime has a lot of things it does differently than other animation, and that can be off-putting to people watching it for the first time. Things like: Why is anime Hair so Weird? Why is the lip sync bad? Why is time weird in anime? Here I give some reasons for this apparent weirdness by showing the cultural, business, and animation dilemmas facing anime creators. Then I show how the solutions they came up with, while perhaps weird by western standards, end up allowing them to create stories with a lot more expressiveness. If you are interested in how anime writing differs from the west, check out this other video I made: • When Two Authors Told the Same Story Chapters: 0:00 - People find anime weird 1:29 - Shonen Jump, the Foundation of Anime 3:21 - Character uniqueness and Hairstyle 5:33 - Anime eyes aren't actually big 7:21 - Non-literal colors 8:20 - Linguistic and cultural indirectness 9:10 - Non-literal sound design 10:10 - Direct comic adaptation 14:30 - Bad animation and Sakuga 20:26 - Why this all matters
