Compact Disc – Why Technics' Radical SL 10 Turntable Was Vinyl's Fierce Last Stand
In this episode Mike and David pay a full Wayne's World-style "We are not worthy" tribute to the magnificent Technics SL-10 turntable. It wasn't the world's first parallel-tracker, and it wasn't the world's first compact record deck, but it was the first to combine these technologies in an ingenious and brilliant way. Forty four years after it first went on sale, the guys think it's still a marvel of audio engineering – and its performance, versatility and build is stunning even now. In a rare outbreak of consensus, they reckon that nothing which has come after has been anywhere near as clever. Each episode of Hi-Fi Riff features Mike and David's unedited, unexpurgated views about all manner of weird and wonderful hi-fi designs. Business executive Mike has a wealth of knowledge from previous hi-fi retail experience, and David has written about hi-fi for thirty years. Now Editor-in-Chief of StereoNET, he's picked up a few things along the way. So relax and enjoy some one-take hi-fi riffing – and please leave your comments below.
