Swedish Christmas Poem - "Tomten" [English Translation]

Told by Börje Ahlstedt, Tomten is a Swedish Christmas poem by Viktor Rydberg first published in 1881. While outwardly being an idyllic Christmas poem, the poem asks about the meaning of life, and follows a mythological creature from Nordic folklore associated today with the Christmas season. Tomte is also the name referring to Santa Clause in modern history. Traditionally the tomte lives in the houses and barns of the farmstead, and acts as their guardian. If treated well, they protect the family and animals from evil and misfortune, and may also aid the chores and farm work. However, they are known to be short tempered, especially when offended. Once insulted, they will usually play tricks, steal items and even maim or kill livestock.
