THE RAVENNA MOSAIC METHOD | Using clay as a temporary base for mosaics
This short video gives you a taster of the Ravenna mosaic method using clay as a temporary base. The video was created while attending an intensive course on the method at Koko Mosaico in Ravenna and is released with their permission. This advanced mosaic method is used for creating detailed mosaics using the opus vermiculatum style and allows the artists to make changes as they work. 00:00 Introduction 00:15 Mould the clay 00:25 Smooth down the surface and transfer the design 00:52 Press the tesserae into the clay 01:42 Tamp down the tesserae and prepare the glue 01:56 Apply muslin to the mosaic 02:30 When dry, flip over and remove clay 03:18 Sprinkle marble dust on the back 03:35 Back butter the mosaic and install on permanent base 03:52 Dampen the muslin and peel away 04:22 Clean and then rub with a diamond sponge 04:51 Cover the edges
