Alan Jackson on Nashville Now the night he became an Opry member
The evening Alan Jackson was inducted into the Opry, June 7, 1991, he afterwards dropped by the Opryland studio where CNN's Nashville Now show was taping and sat down and talked a bit with guest host Charlie Chase, who was filling in that night for Ralph Emery. Randy Travis was a guest on the show that night, and he himself had just inducted Alan over at the Opry, the first time he'd done an Opry induction, so I guess they were both pretty stoked. Randy later sang Point of Light which had just been released. Getting back to Alan, I happened to be at a little reception during the annual Nashville DJ convention in probably 1989, and Alan, somewhat new in town, walked in. Being about seven feet tall with that big white hat and blond hair, he created a little stir and seemed a bit embarrassed knowing he stood out so much in the crowd. It was like he was almost trying to scrunch down and be as short as possible. But I remember he gave an impression of being a genuinely nice guy, which in fact proved over the years to be the case.
