It is in this context that it is befitting to remember the contributions of a giant. Rev. Thomas Koshy. Rev.Thomas Koshy was not an ordinary missionary or spiritual revivalist. The scintillating #religious #songs composed by him stand testimony to this even today. Besides these, a number of hymns were translated by him from English to Malayalam. In doing so, he had taken care to preserve the sense and beauty of the hymns intact. Some of these songs are unrivalled in breadth and beauty of expression. When sung with the full knowledge of their intent and import, these songs transport you to transcendental heights, where you have the exhilarating experience of a blissful detachment from the sensual susceptibilities of our temporal moorings. Rev. Koshy was born in 1857 as the fifth son of Sri Thomas, a Catechist attached to the $L.M.S. Mission, #Quilon. He had his early education at the C.M.S. School, Mavelikara and later at the #C.M.S. High School, Kottayam. He completed his matriculation in 1880. Young Koshy was initiated to the regular study. But he lost his father, rather prematurely, while he was studying at the C.M.S. High School, Kottayam, and an event that greatly shocked and pained him. In 1881, when he was 24, Koshy was appointed as the Secretary to the first #Bishop of Travancore-Cochin, functioning from Pallam, Kottayam. He served as Writer to the #Missionary Bishop at Trichur from 1883-1891. His stewardship at Trichur turned out to be the irrevocable turning point in his life. It was here that he found satisfying answers to the many intriguing questions which tormented his mind in his quest for spiritual knowledge and truth. During this period, he came under the influence of Sri #Lakshmana Rao, a Brahmin convert to Christianity, who visited Trichur regularly to address the Annual #Keswick Convention. Sri Rao was an accomplished speaker and was endowed with great charm. What he preached and practiced had a profound influence on young Koshy. While at Trichur he started a monthly magazine #Atmopakari to help reach his message to a wider public. He also started the #Y.M.C.A. at Trichur. In 1891, Sri Koshy was made a life-time missionary by Rev. #Brown, the Missionary-in Church at Trichur. By the end of 1892, he was selected to study theology at the #C.N.I. Seminary, Kottayam. In 1895, he was ordained as a Deacon at Kunnamkulam and he took charge of that parish on the death of #Rev.A.J.Jocob. He was ordained as a Priest in October 1896. Rev. Koshy’s humility and simplicity endeared him to all those who met with him irrespective of their religious affiliations. His popularity can be judged from the fact that he was the principal speaker at the #Maramon #Convention in #1903. He retired from Pallam in October 1929 and lived with his son Rev. George Koshy, who was the Vicar at Olassa, Kottayam. Later at the instance of his close relatives, he shifted to Mavelikkara, where he passed away peacefully at his ancestral home, to his eternal abode in June, 1940, at the age of 83.
