Wizard of Oz AnimaScope Demo - Westworld Artists, 1966-67
Shown at OzCon International 2023 from 'The Rare, The Bad, and the Oddity presentation by Nate Barlow. This short was part of the AnimaScope was a primitive form of motion-capture created by Leen Maurer in the 1960s as a cheaper form of animation. Touted as animation without drawings, it utilized high-contrast photography of specially made-up actors against a black stage and compositing. Unfortunately, after producing a half-hour network TV pilot entitled The Wonderland of Oz, the company folded. The Oz pilot never aired and whether or not it still exists is unknown. The clips in this demo are the only elements from the AnimaScope's venture in Oz circulating.
