For this old townscape walk, we'll be walking through the "Ondo Seto Townscape" on Kurahashi Island in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, a town that has existed side by side with the sea. Ondo Strait in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, is said to be "Japan's first artificial strait," opened by Taira no Kiyomori. People used to cross this narrow strait, just 80 meters wide, by ferry between Kegoya in Kure City and Ondo Town, making it the shortest regular shipping route in Japan. Even after the First Ondo Bridge was built in 1961, the ferry remained an essential route for commuters and students. However, due to a combination of factors such as a decrease in passenger numbers following the completion of the Ondo Bridge and Second Ondo Bridge, boat breakdowns, and the captain's aging and injury, the ferry sadly came to an end on October 31, 2021 (Reiwa 3), bringing its nearly 300-year history to an end. If you take a step along the coastal road from the former dock on the Ondo side, you'll find a maze of sloped alleyways and staircases, creating a nostalgic townscape.
