Robert Lepage et sortir du cadre | Atypique HEC Montréal
“You shouldn’t try to be number one. You should try to be unique.” A multidisciplinary artist, Robert Lepage has conquered stages around the world with large-scale shows filled with powerful imagery. This unusual style is the result of a unique creative process that flattens hierarchies, breaks the rules of repetition, and relies on exploration. “Usually, when I start a show, I never begin with a theme or a pre-written story. I always try to start with something that will lead us to perform,” he explains. “And at a certain point, this kind of playful spirit will eventually become serious.” Fresh out of the Quebec City Conservatory of Dramatic Arts, Robert Lepage understood that he would have to create his own projects and find what made him unique if he hoped to make a living from his art. This search led him to reflect on the weight of conventions. By constantly following the same formula, can one truly create something surprising? “I thought to myself, maybe we need to break the mold, maybe we need to allow ourselves things we wouldn’t otherwise allow ourselves.” It’s this deconstruction, and the approach refined by his company Ex Machina, that Robert Lepage shares here. A fascinating dive into the creative journey of a director who claims not to know where he’s going in order to better let the work emerge, while continuing to transform his show through interaction with the audience. His Atypical? Thinking outside the box. ... The experience of great leaders represents an invaluable source of practical wisdom. To document their journeys and build upon their successes, Atypique presents interviews where each leader shares their unique "atypical" aspect—that element they cherish and that makes them stand out—in their approach to leadership. This unique documentary series preserves and immortalizes remarkable leadership experiences in Quebec and around the world. These stories inspire current and future leaders to fully embrace their potential, nurture it, and become the leaders of tomorrow.
