Paradroid - History and Gameplay on the Commodore 64 - Inside Andrew Braybrook's Masterpiece

Paradroid – Andrew Braybrook’s groundbreaking action-strategy hybrid for the Commodore 64 – remains one of the most technically impressive games ever released on the system. In this video, we explore the history behind Paradroid, how it was developed at Hewson Consultants, and why Braybrook’s clever programming pushed the C64 far beyond what most games attempted in 1985. We’ll also dive into complete gameplay, including how the iconic “Influence Device” works, the droid-transfer mini-game, and what makes Paradroid such a unique blend of arcade action and tactical decision-making. In this video: • The development history of Paradroid • Andrew Braybrook’s design notes and programming innovations • Full gameplay overview and strategies • Its impact, legacy, and later versions (Heavy Metal Paradroid, Paradroid Redux, and Paradroid 90) If you love Commodore 64 history, retro game deep dives, or the brilliant works of Andrew Braybrook, this is a must-watch. ** UPDATE ** I goofed up a part in this video, and completely missed the US release of the game, which was handled by Thunder Mountain, the bargain-bin publishing arm of Mindscape. Mindscape used Thunder Mountain as a vehicle to re-package their own games at a heavily discounted price (e.g., $9.99), and also picked up others, such as Paradroid. That aside, it's still notable that Paradroid only saw light in North America as a low-visibility, bargain-bin release, and not as a heavily-promoted title that would have befitted a game of its stature and reputation.
