In mid-1969, José Rico and his then-partner, Milionário, met in the city of Dourados, MS, in a barbershop owned by the late barber and composer Armando Perrupato, where they discussed Armando's songs that the duo would sing and perhaps, someday, record. But with them was a young man named Victor Wagner (not the one from the soap opera) who the following year would be working in São Paulo as artistic director of the California record label, owned by the also late Mario Vieira. Armando Perrupato, a friend of this young record label director, told me that the following year the duo approached the California record label, and when they met Mario Vieira, he was with Victor Wagner. Mario Vieira was very reluctant to record the duo because, although he considered them excellent, he didn't see them as having the potential to sell many records, as they weren't yet in the media, nor were they known in any region, not even performing in circuses, as was common at the time. Also, the duo didn't have the money to record for paid advertising, that is, acquiring the first 300 LPs. Victor Wagner, who had already heard the duo in the barbershop of composer Armando Perrupato, insisted so much with Mario Vieira that he ended up making an agreement to be responsible for the recording. Perhaps the duo didn't know, or would ever know, but that's how the recording of their first LP by the California record label happened. The album itself never came to fruition, but it served as a calling card that attracted the interest of other producers to the duo, and soon after they recorded for Chantecler, with great promotion on radio programs.
