What Happens When Jesus Stops You in Your Tracks
Pastor Matt opens the sermon by celebrating the graduates in the room before posing a question that sets the tone for everything that follows: "Have you ever noticed how quickly God can change a life?" Some transformations take years, others take decades — but sometimes God changes a life in an instant. That's exactly the kind of moment we find in Acts 9. The big idea for the morning is clear and compelling: Jesus transforms sinners and then sends them on mission. Before diving into Acts 9, Pastor Matt gives helpful context by revisiting Saul's earlier appearances in the book of Acts. We first meet Saul in Acts 7, standing watch over the garments of those who stoned Stephen, the first Christian martyr. Then in Acts 8:1 we're told that "Saul approved of his execution," and just a few verses later in Acts 8:3 we see that "Saul was ravaging the church and entering house after house." This is not a man who was spiritually curious or searching — he was a zealous, dangerous opponent of the Way, the early name for followers of Jesus. With that running start, Pastor Matt walks through Acts 9:1-18, where Saul is struck down on the road to Damascus by a light from heaven and hears the voice of Jesus saying, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?" Saul is left blind, dependent, and undone — his identity shattered, his confidence gone. From this passage, Pastor Matt draws three powerful lessons. The first is that Jesus confronts us in our direction. Saul was not just wrong about Jesus — he was sincerely, passionately wrong, which surfaces a hard truth that applies to all of us: we can be sincere and still be sincerely wrong. Before Jesus can improve your life, He will confront your life. The second lesson is that Jesus interrupts us with His presence. Jesus doesn't say, "Why are you persecuting them?" He says, "Why are you persecuting me?" — because an attack on the people of God is an attack on Jesus Himself. This moment on the road illustrates one of the larger themes running through the entire "Bible in a Jar" series: salvation is a divine act that demands a human response. Jesus initiates; Saul responds. The third lesson is that Jesus redefines our purpose. In verse 15, the Lord tells Ananias of Saul, "He is a chosen instrument of mine." The persecutor would become the preacher. The enemy would become the ambassador. The destroyer would become the builder. Jesus doesn't just save us from something — He saves us for something. The sermon then shifts into what Pastor Matt describes as "part sermon, part graduation ceremony," as the church celebrates Jacob and Katie Willoughby completing the full five-year Antioch Project training program. The Antioch Project is a ministry training program that spans two states, five churches, and has produced 76 alumni — with roughly 30 families now serving in full-time vocational ministry across at least six states. Jacob and Katie's journey mirrors Saul's in striking ways: they left the familiar comfort of Northern California, moved to Fort Worth, Texas, and launched a college ministry called Christian Impact — before they even fully knew what God would do through it. During the service, mentors shared video tributes highlighting Katie's heart for evangelism, her perseverance through hardship, and her gift for opening her home and life to others. Jacob was commended for his deep loyalty to God, his courage in stepping into the unknown, and his commitment to developing leaders who grow in character, not just ministry skill. Students from Christian Impact also shared moving testimonies of how Jacob and Katie had shared the gospel with them, discipled them, and helped them find their footing in their walks with God. Pastor Matt closes the sermon with four reasons why all of this matters for everyone in the room. First, everyone needs their own encounter with Jesus — we cannot live on borrowed faith. Second, the past does not have to define the future — if God could use Saul, who called himself the worst of all sinners, He can use anyone. Third, calling is not just for vocational ministers — it's for every believer. Every Christ follower is called to follow Him, serve others, use their gifts, be a witness, and make disciples. The memory verse for the week captures this beautifully: 2 Corinthians 5 says, "Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us." And fourth, Pastor Matt invites every person to honestly ask: where am I sensing the need for further development to live out my call? God is just as committed to our development as He is to what He has called us to do. The question is whether we are willing to not just go through the challenges, but to grow through them.
