Swedish Mountain Cattle, milking by hand Mjölka en fjällko

Swedish Mountain Cattle ("Fjällko") and their equivalent in Finland called Finncattle, are native cattle breeds adapted to the cold climate. It can successfully be kept on forest pasture. The fat and protein content is higher than from other dairy breeds. However, the milk production levels are lower. Mountain cattle tends to be long-living and to have good fertility. For one year my son milked the cow "Stareye" on weekends. I followed him with the camera 2 weekends in september 2021. Note that some steps of the milking procedure is not included in the film: cleaning of the teats and filtering the milk before filling up bottles. Fjällkor och fjällnära kor är framavlade för att kunna söka upp sin egen mat och gillar till exempel blåbärsris och svamp. Om Sverige hamnar i en krissituation då det inte går att importera kan fjällkon blir den mest värdefulla av alla kor. Under ett års tid har sonen mjölkat fjällnära kon Stjärnöga på helgerna.
