Compared to specialists like cyclists or weightlifters, they did not stand out, to say the least. This led us, and other researchers, to believe CrossFit athletes are true generalists—good at everything, but not great at any one thing. That question of specialization has intrigued me for a long time. So, what if we tested them in their own environment, using movements they have mastered? For the first time ever, we measured elite CrossFit athletes during an Open workout, performed at full intensity. The pacing strategies—and especially the power outputs—we saw were surprising and kindof made me reevaluate the true fitness of these athletes.
