Immanuel: God Is With Us | Isaiah 7 In this drash, Rabbi Mordecai Griffin explores Isaiah 7 and the prophetic sign of Immanuel—עִמָּנוּ אֵל, “God is with us.” While the passage is often reduced to a debate over the virgin birth, its broader message concerns HaShem’s covenant faithfulness to the Jewish people, Judaism, and the House of David. Isaiah spoke during a time of national fear, political crisis, and threatened destruction. Yet HaShem declared that the House of David would not be abandoned. This teaching examines the historical context of Isaiah 7, ancient Jewish interpretations, the messianic understanding found in the Gospel of Matthew, and the connection between Immanuel, Messiah, Torah, Israel, and the future Olam Haba. The ultimate future is not the replacement of Israel or the abolition of Torah. The prophets describe a world in which the Messiah reigns from the throne of David, the nations come to Jerusalem, and Torah goes forth from Zion.
