FHP Chase Ends in PIT Maneuver After Driver Hits Another Vehicle

On June 3, 2024, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop a 2015 Chrysler 200 on Interstate 4 near DeLand in Volusia County. According to reports, the vehicle was being driven by Wilfred Ruiz of Orlando and was allegedly traveling around 115 miles per hour when the trooper attempted the stop. Instead of pulling over, Ruiz reportedly fled from the trooper, driving recklessly and leading law enforcement on a pursuit that stretched across multiple counties. The chase continued from Volusia County into Seminole County, with reported speeds reaching up to 120 miles per hour. During the pursuit, Ruiz’s vehicle reportedly collided with a white box truck but continued fleeing. The chase eventually moved into Orange County, where Florida Highway Patrol troopers used a PIT maneuver to stop the Chrysler. The maneuver caused the vehicle to crash into a concrete wall, but troopers said Ruiz then attempted to get away by ramming patrol vehicles. Troopers were eventually able to pin the vehicle against the median and bring the pursuit to an end. When a trooper approached the sedan, Ruiz reportedly showed signs of overdosing, and Narcan was administered before he was taken for medical clearance. According to reports, a search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered cocaine, numerous plastic baggies, a digital scale, and a black purse containing IDs and credit cards belonging to other people. Ruiz was later booked into the Orange County Jail. He faced multiple charges, including fleeing and eluding, fleeing with disregard for safety, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, and fraud.
