LACO SummerFest S3:E7 Shankar Plays Shankar
Ravi Shankar’s Sitar Concerto No. 3 is a beautiful example of a piece that connects aspects of the Western classical tradition with features of Indian classical music. The piece begins with a lively introduction played by the orchestra followed by three movements, with moods shifting from melancholy and pensive to searching and confident. Concerto No. 3's music comes with rhythmic intensity that builds musical lines passed from the sitar and among the orchestra. LACO performed this piece with Shankar’s Grammy-nominated daughter Anoushka Shankar in May 2022 at Alex Theatre and Royce Hall, with Jaime Martín conducting.
