But did you know that Silverqueen's famed chocolate originated in Garut? The factory is located on Jalan Cimanuk, Garut. This is where the fame of Silverqueen and the Ceres Industrial Company began. Curious about the story? Since the Dutch colonial era, Indonesia has been known as a producer of the best cocoa. And some of the best comes from the island of Java. These cocoa beans are then processed into chocolate. The Vanhotten family, a joint venture owner from Amsterdam, was known throughout Europe as a producer of the finest chocolate. Together with Khoe Keg Goan, a native of Chinese descent, they began building a chocolate processing factory in Garut. At that time, chocolate processing was still a cottage industry. Finally, in 1890, NV Ceres was established in Garut. Under this Dutch entrepreneur, NV Ceres continued to grow until the early 1940s. In 1942, the Japanese invaded Indonesia. The Dutch were expelled. Japanese soldiers began to occupy strategic areas in Indonesia. This situation led to the disintegration of the Dutch-Chinese business partnership. For security reasons, the Dutch eventually sold the company to another party at a low price. The lucky person to purchase this chocolate factory was Ming Chee Chuang. He was a Burmese (Myanmar) businessman of Chinese descent who had long resided in Bandung. Years later, despite the turmoil of his entrepreneurial spirit during the revolution, Ming Chee Chuang was still able to develop the Ceres chocolate business. To facilitate marketing, Ming Chee retained the name NV Ceres. On January 20, 1950, NV Ceres changed its name to PT Ceres, and is now the Ceres Group Industrial Company. Ming Chee's ideas helped the Ceres company continue to grow. One of Ming Chee's brilliant ideas was to mix cocoa and cashew nuts, then package them into chocolate bars. This is how Silverqueen chocolate was born. Silverqueen chocolate became so popular that it even caught the attention of President Sukarno. It was said that it was so delicious that President Sukarno would only eat Ming Chee's chocolate. Ming Chee Chuang was praised by the Proclaimer as the maker of the most delicious chocolate. Ceres Products Besides Silverqueen, Ceres produces a variety of legendary chocolate products. For example, Ritz biscuits were once controversial due to a name dispute with Nabisco Foods. However, Ceres later won back the Ritz name and continues to market these chocolate biscuits under the Ceres name. If you remember back during the New Order era, when I was a child, we often found a very popular chocolate product: Ayam Jago brand chocolate. This was also one of Ceres' flagship products. We also know the legendary chocolate sprinkles, Ceres sprinkles. Over the years, Ceres has produced dozens of chocolate products.
