Florence (Italian: Firenze) is a city in Italy, located west of San Marino. It is the capital of the Tuscany region in northern Italy and the center of the province bearing its name. For a short period, it also served as the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The city is built around the Arno River, which flows through it. With its surrounding settlements, the city has a population of nearly one million and, as in the past, remains one of the most important commercial centers in Italy and Europe. Furthermore, Florence, known as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, is a world-famous tourist city renowned for its culture and architecture. The city is home to important art galleries and museums. Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo are world-famous artists who grew up in this historic city. The famous writer and poet Dante Alighieri also lived and drew inspiration from this city. Thanks to Nicolò Machiavelli's (1469-1527) writings on the history of Florence in the 1520s, the city's history is now quite well-known. Nicolò Machiavelli wrote "Istorie Fiorentine" at the special request of the Medici family, and subsequently presented this comprehensive work to Father Giulio de Medici, known as Clement VII, in 1525. Having begun writing books about his country's history in his youth, Machiavelli is therefore considered one of the first historians.
