The city is considered one of the best preserved Hanseatic cities and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Visby was one of the leading trading ports in the Baltic region and an important location for the Hanseatic League. In 1525, Visby was captured by troops from the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and almost all of the city's churches were destroyed in the process. The German merchant church of St. Mary was the only one spared. Today it is the cathedral of Visby. Many ruins of the remaining churches can still be seen in Visby today. The old city wall of Visby, on the other hand, is very well preserved, which is certainly due to the fact that Visby has been a listed building since 1805. We enjoy our day in Visby in wonderful weather with an extended walk through the city past church ruins and city gates. In particular, however, the many beautiful house facades with floral decorations stand out. This video belongs to the tour "Baltic Sea with Helsinki", on which we have been in July 2023 with the Mein Schiff 6 on the road. The trip leads from Kiel via Gdansk, Klaipėda, Visby, Riga, Helsinki, Tallinn and Stockholm back to Kiel. A really great tour.
