Salamanca 1812: The French Mistake Wellington Destroyed

On 22 July 1812, Marshal Auguste Marmont believed that Wellington’s army was retreating from Salamanca. He extended the French left wing in an attempt to cut the Allied road back to Portugal. Wellington saw something very different. The French divisions had moved too far apart. Their leading formations were exposed, their commanders were working with incomplete information, and much of the Allied army remained concealed behind the ridges near the village of Arapiles. Wellington abandoned his planned withdrawal and ordered an immediate attack. The entire Battle of Salamanca did not last only forty minutes. Fighting continued into the evening. Yet during one remarkably brief phase, Wellington’s British and Portuguese divisions shattered the French left wing and changed the direction of the battle before Marmont’s army could recover.
