Why Neutral Paintings Are Harder Than Colourful Ones!

Are neutral paintings really easier than colourful ones? It’s a common belief among artists—but in this video, I explain why that couldn’t be further from the truth. Painting with muted colours like browns and greys actually requires a much deeper understanding of value, temperature, and edges, because without strong colour, there’s nowhere to hide. Using a brown and grey dog as an example, I walk you through the key principles that make or break a successful neutral painting. You’ll learn how to control your values to create form and depth, how subtle shifts in warm and cool tones bring life to a limited palette, and how edges can guide the viewer’s eye when colour isn’t doing the work for you. I also share a detailed look at my oil painting palette, including how I mix rich blacks, colourful browns, and dynamic greys using complementary colours. You’ll see how I approach mid tones, dark values, and highlights, plus tips on brushwork to suggest texture—like wiry fur—using an alla prima technique. If you’ve ever struggled with neutral subjects looking muddy, flat, or lifeless, this video will help you understand why—and more importantly, how to fix it. Mastering neutral painting will not only improve your results with muted subjects, but will make you a stronger painter overall.
