The best time to perform cleft grafting is from mid-February to March 20th, preferably during the waning moon. If this isn't possible in such a lunar climate, the graft must be performed during the same lunar phase as the scions. Let's take a detailed look at how to perform a cleft graft, following our instructions. Procedure Make a 4- or 5-centimeter-deep cleft on the branch of the plant that will serve as the rootstock: choose a straight, vigorous branch, appropriately stripped of its topsoil to facilitate the graft. Make oblique cuts on the scions to obtain a pointed, smooth tip with the greatest amount of exposed living wood: it's important to create a wedge shape at the bottom. The prepared scion is inserted into the ends of the cleft so that its shape matches that of the rootstock. Insert the first scion into the cleft like a pen: the bark of the scion and the rootstock must match perfectly. Proceed with the second scion in the same way. Anchor the scions to the cleft by tightly tying the rootstock with wet raffia or electrical tape, starting from the bottom up so that water cannot penetrate the lateral wounds. To prevent the onset of disease, cover the exposed living wood with grafting compound. Helpful Tips For cleft grafting, you will need two scions, which must be taken from branches that are at least one year old with well-swollen and healthy buds. Remove the scions from the mother plant a few days before grafting and store in the refrigerator at 4°C. Alternatively, they can be buried in the sand or removed immediately, if conditions permit. To facilitate opening the crack in the rootstock to insert and correctly position the scions, you can use a flat-blade screwdriver as a wedge. Make sure the knife is sterilized and sharp: grafting knives are specifically designed to make cuts in the bark and align the line of the scions with the crack. Useful tip Be careful not to get any mastic inside the cut on the rootstock where the two scions were inserted, as this could compromise the graft's success. To prevent this, simply cover and seal the cut with a thin layer of cloth to prevent water from entering. SOURCE: http://www.ideegreen.it/innesto-a-spa...
