ASMR/Relaxation - A (Time Travel) Tour of The Field of the Cloth of Gold (history/culture)
This soft spoken history ASMR podcast explores an extraordinarily lavish Tudor event – The Field of the Cloth of Gold. This sumptuous occasion took the form of an 18-day festival, to celebrate peace between England and France – and it featured masques, music, jousting and banquets, as well as an array of beautiful cloth-of-gold decorations and pavilions. Together, we’ll time-travel back to the event and explore some of its highlights... and we’ll also take a peep inside the dazzling temporary palace that Henry VIII had built specifically for the event. FInally, we’ll join Henry’s queen, Katherine of Aragon, as she hosts a special feast in honour of King Francois I. My heartfelt thanks to Philipp Bodor for his amazing music! HISTORY DISCLAIMER: The Field of the Cloth of Gold was a huge and complex event, and in creating this imaginary tour, I’ve only touched on a few details of its history. In addition, in a couple of specific places, I’ve also taken a small degree of artistic license, to add extra atmosphere to the listening experience! However, if you’d like to read up more fully about what actually happened and why, here are two resources I’d like to recommend: 1) The Chronicle of Edward Hall – Hall was a contemporary Tudor historian and he also attended the Field of the Cloth of Gold – so his Chronicle contains a fascinating eye-witness account of it. You’ll find an online copy of it here: https://archive.org/details/hallschro... 2) The Field of The Cloth of Gold, by Glenn Richardson (Yale Press, 2017) – this is a very accessible and engaging book about the event, with lots of illustrations (which personally, I always appreciate!) that quotes from Hall’s Chronicle, as well as from other sources who attended the summit and wrote eye-witness accounts of it: https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/97803... While I was researching this talk, I was also able to attend the Field of The Cloth of Gold virtual summit, which was a fun and interesting weekend of video talks organized by The Tudor Travel Guide – you can find more info about their events here: https://thetudortravelguide.com The detailed painting of The Field of the Cloth of Gold that features in the slideshow is part of the collection of the Historic Royal Places and is on display at Hampton Court Palace. If you're interested in the Tudors and their history, I would thoroughly recommend a trip there: https://www.hrp.org.uk/hampton-court-... This, with all the other images featured in the slideshow, are in the Public Domain and are credited where required.
