Indian banks have been fighting for deposits. Deposit growth has been lagging loan growth since the COVID-19 years. As of July 26, the deposits have been growing at 11% while loans have been growing at 15.1% YoY. The fight reached a new high in July when a leading private bank like HDFC Bank announced a 7.4% rate for term deposits of 1-3 years. Separately, the government has also announced some amendments to the banking acts, which came in as a bit of disappointment because they seem peripheral.
