Instead, two neighboring countries, Malaysia and Singapore, received the award from the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. In response, the Deputy Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak, emphasized that the government does not prioritize awards in organizing the Hajj. The Indonesian government's primary focus is on the satisfaction and protection of pilgrims. "Of course, that is the authority of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We respect the subjectivity of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," Dahnil told the Hajj Media Center (MCH) team in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, Wednesday (June 3, 2026). He revealed two issues that have been of concern to Saudi Arabia regarding Indonesia's Hajj implementation. First, media coverage is very open and free in conveying various criticisms and issues during the Hajj. "The media is very free. We certainly cannot control the media because that is a basic principle of democracy," he said. The second note relates to the health aspect and the implementation of health istitha'ah (Istitha'ah) for Hajj pilgrims. As the country with the largest number of pilgrims in the world, reaching 221,000, Indonesia has had a higher number of pilgrim deaths in absolute terms than other countries. However, Dahnil emphasized that the percentage figure is relatively lower and continues to decline. In fact, during this year's Hajj season, the number of pilgrim deaths has decreased drastically compared to the previous year. "Last year, there were more than 400 people, while this year, as of today (yesterday, ed.) it's around 180. The decrease is very significant," he said. According to Dahnil, the decrease in the death rate is due to the stricter implementation of health checks before departure. The government also plans to continue strengthening this policy for the upcoming Hajj. "This is indeed a dilemma, but it must be implemented because it is mandated by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as the organizer of the Hajj. Going forward, we will be stricter regarding health checks," he concluded. On a separate occasion, the Minister of Hajj and Umrah (Menhaj), Moch Irfan Yusuf, expressed a similar sentiment. For next year's Hajj, his ministry will further tighten health checks in various regions. "We haven't significantly improved the standard of health checks. Although it's good in many regions, there may be some areas where the implementation of health checks is less than optimal," he said. Gus Irfan emphasized that age is not the primary determinant of a person's eligibility for the Hajj. He emphasized that the health of prospective pilgrims is more important. He cited the example of pilgrims over 100 years old who were still able to depart this year because they met the health requirements. He acknowledged that health workers in the field often face social and cultural challenges when declaring a prospective pilgrim as not meeting the health requirements, especially if the pilgrim has been waiting for years for the Hajj.
