He was particularly inspired by the collection "Des Knaben Wunderhorn. Alte Deutsche Lieder" (published 1806 - 1808). The poets Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano had picked up these popular texts throughout Germany. For this purpose, they evaluated old chronicles, almanacs and prayer books. Gustav Mahler set a total of 24 of the songs to music, not only in the so-called "Lieder und Gesängen aus "Des Knaben Wunderhorn", but also in the second, third and fourth symphonies as well as in his "Lieder und Gesängen aus der Jugendzeit".
