Wishing to practice himself a monk goes alone into the forest otherwise goes to the villages to educate people ในสมัยแห่งกาลรุ่งเรืองของพระพุทธศานา แห่งกรุงศรีอยุธยา กษัตริย์ศรี ลังกามีความศรัทธาแรงกล้าที่จะฟื้นฟูพระพุทธศาสนาให้กลับคืนสู่ศรีลังกาอีกครั้ง จึงส่งราชทูตมายังกรุงศรีอยุธยา ในปีพ.ศ.๒๒๙๔ พระเจ้าอยู่หัวบรม โกศ กษัตริย์กรุงศรีอยุธยา โปรดให้คัดเลือกพระสงฆ์ที่แตกฉานในพระ ไตรปิฎกและเคร่งครัดในพระธรรมวินัย ประกอบด้วย พระสงฆ์ ๑๘ รูป นำ โดยพระอุบาลีมหาเถระและพระอริยมุนีมหาเถระ พร้อมทั้งสามเณรอีก ๗ รูป ออกเดินทางด้วยเรือกำปั่นหลวงเพื่อให้เป็นพาหนะส่งคณะสงฆ์ไทยไปลังกาเพื่อสืบต่อพระพุทธศานาให้ชาวพุทธศรีลังกากลับมารุ่งเรืองอีกครั้ง จากเหตุการณ์ประวัติศาสตร์ครั้งนั้น ทำให้คณะพระธรรมจาริกของไทย มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อจะเผยแผ่พระศาสนาในดินแดนของศรีลังกาอีกครั้ง ซึ่งการจาริกในครั้งนี้ คณะพระสงค์ไทยริเริ่มโครงการ ธรรมยาตรา เชื่อมสัมพันธ์ ไทย ศรีลังกา ขึ้นมา คณะพระธุดงค์ของไทยได้ฝึกข้อวัตรปฏิบัติ ตามแนวทางธุดงค์วัตร ขององค์ สมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าที่ทรงบัญญัติไว้ ซึ่งการได้ฝึกฝนตามข้อวัตร ปฏิบัติ ออกเดินจาริก จากพระนครศรีอยุธยา สู่ จังหวัดน่าน เป็นระยะ ทาง ๗๖๑ กิโลเมตร เพื่อให้พระภิกษุได้ฝึกข้อวัตรปฏิบัติในการธุดงค์ได้ อย่างชำนาญนั้นเอง การออกจาริกของคณะพระสงฆ์ไทยในครั้งนี้เพื่อ เดินตามรอยขององค์ สมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธะ เมื่อครั้งพระพุทธองค์และหมู่แห่งภิกษุทั้งหลายนับพันตามเสด็จ เพื่อทรงจาริกโปรดเวไนย์สัตว์ตามเมืองต่างๆ จึงกลายเป็นข้อวัตรปฏิบัติกันเรื่อยมาของพระภิกษุสงฆ์ที่ถือเอาการจาริก หลังออกพรรษาไปแล้ว เพื่อฝึกตัวฝึกตนในข้อวัตรปฏิบัติของธุดงค์ วัตร หากมุ่งประโยชน์พระสงฆ์เองแล้วไซร้ ย่อมเดินตามป่าเขาลำเนาไพร แต่หากมุ่งประโยชน์เพื่อหยั่งความศรัทธาให้เกิดขึ้นกับมวลมนุษย์แล้วนั้น ย่อมเดินจาริกสู่เมือง เพื่อฉลองศรัทธาแก่ญาติโยม และกราบไหว้สักการะศาสนสถานสำคัญต่างๆ ของเมืองนั้นๆ เฉกเช่นเดียวกับการจาริกครั้ง ประวัติศาสตร์นี้ในประเทศศรีลังกา
