This recording is not intended to teach dancing, but rather to show the essential model of the dance, some of its variants, and some of its variations. We have called them variants of the cueca because one or more of its constituent elements—text, music, and dance—reveal some transformation, always taking as a reference to the model we have presented as essential. The essential cueca primarily comprises 48 measures, although examples of 44, 52, and 56 measures can be found, encompassing in its text a couplet, a quatrain or redondilla, a seguidilla, and a closing refrain. If this text changes, in the so-called long cueca, in which an indeterminate number of seguidillas are added, we are dealing with a variant. We were able to observe and learn some of these variants despite their relative obsolescence; others were described and taught by those who danced them in their youth or had seen their elders dance them.
