The trailer for the 4K restored version of "Tokyo Melody Ryuichi Sakamoto," the long-awaited documentary capturing the daily life of world-renowned musician Ryuichi Sakamoto in his younger days on film for the first time, has been released! In May 1984, Ryuichi Sakamoto, then 32, observed the sounds of Tokyo. The newly released trailer begins with an improvisational scene in which Sakamoto, 32 years old at the time, curiously plays with a toy camera that director Elizabeth Leonard purchased in Japan—similar to the space guns that were common at the time. The trailer then moves on to show the then-32-year-old Sakamoto in May 1984, surrounded by the sounds that permeate Tokyo and its streets. Regarding the relationship between music and Japan at the time, Sakamoto says, "I believe music was created for extraordinary times, but the ubiquity of music in Japan today means, conversely, that extraordinary times continue as part of everyday life." The trailer then moves on to scenes of recording "Ongaku Zukan" at Onkyo House Studio, where he was still in the midst of production, using a Fairlight CMI digital synthesizer to create samples and loops, visualizing them on a monitor. The trailer also features numerous performance scenes, including footage of Sakamoto playing "M.A.Y. IN THE BACKYARD," which is included in "Ongaku Zukan," and "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence," the theme song for the film "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence," for which he became the first Japanese artist to win the Oscar for Best Original Score in 1988. It also includes footage of a YMO concert, and a scene of Sakamoto and his then-wife Akiko Yano playing a duet of "Tohoku" on the grand piano at their home. The trailer features a variety of Tokyo backdrops, including street vision screens, electronics stores, ticket gates, trains, festival music, pachinko parlors, and people dancing in the streets, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the sounds of Tokyo that Sakamoto observed.
