You probably know quite a lot about the Muslim Quarter in Jerusalem. I visited it during the war on March 23, 2026, to see what felt different compared to the days before the conflict with Iran. First of all, there were no tourists at all. Most of the local residents were either at work or staying inside their homes. Nearly all the shops were closed, except for essential places like clinics and supermarkets. We were surprised to find that one of the best hummus spots was still open, and we were able to enjoy a warm, comforting meal of hummus and falafel. At the same time, the broader situation is tense and uncertain due to the ongoing war. Security restrictions are in place across the city. All major holy sites are closed: the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is shut, Jews are not allowed to access the Western Wall, and Muslims cannot enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque. These unprecedented limitations highlight the seriousness of the situation. Residents are following strict safety guidelines. Public gatherings are limited, and people are advised to stay close to protected areas whenever possible. However, the Old City itself does not provide real protection, as there are no proper bomb shelters within its historic walls. This makes the sense of vulnerability even stronger for those who remain there.
