Facing Stigma: The Radical Right to Be Crazy Introduced by: Fernando Colina (writer and head of psychiatry at Río Ortega Hospital, Valladolid) In 2013, the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) was published. The central manual of psychiatry achieved what seemed impossible: to pathologize practically all human behaviors and reactions. Psychiatric science, despite not having demonstrated the biological difference between mental health and illness, claims to know where the boundary lies between normal and abnormal. Classify and diagnose, in order to immediately apply pharmacological treatment that eliminates the symptoms. And once the symptom is calmed, the rehabilitative machinery is set in motion to modify behavior. But what needs fixing? What do we need to be cured of? Is another kind of psychiatry possible, one that listens to the suffering of the individual without labeling or normalizing it? What would a mental health institution that respected the right to be mentally ill look like? What if, instead of rehabilitating the patient, we talked about emancipation?
