But are these tools safe? When an electrician needs to identify the live conductor in a residential installation or detect the presence of voltage, even in an industrial environment, the most common tools are neon test screwdrivers or voltage detector pens. Are there risks to the user when using these tools? I can tell you in advance that the answer is yes, but the biggest problem in using some of these tools is not necessarily the tool, but the user. Speaking first about neon test pens, there are a few points to highlight besides the user's lack of care. Tools like these are sold at any hardware store and even in electrical supply stores, but the vast majority don't even have instruction manuals or safety recommendations. With voltage detector pens, however, in many cases, especially among large manufacturers, we have instruction manuals with numerous safety descriptions that are completely ignored by users. So in short, the detector pen wasn't made to be used everywhere, as there are safety recommendations to be followed, and the overwhelming majority of neon test pens don't even indicate any recommendations. Voltage detector pens and neon test pens can be used without many problems to detect the live conductor of a known circuit in a residential environment. For voltage detection, forget the neon test pen. In this case, the detector pen is more reliable, but always verify the presence of voltage with a good multimeter, as the voltage present is not always dangerous, and in some cases, the fact that the pen does not detect voltage does not necessarily mean that this voltage does not exist or is not dangerous. Do you like neon test keys and detector pens? Look for those that have a proven track record and instruction manuals, and above all, rigorously follow the instructions contained in these manuals.
