Skeletal health develops over time: during growth, bone formation exceeds bone destruction, until peak bone mass is reached around age 25–30. A proper diet and an active lifestyle during this period are crucial to optimally filling one's personal bone mass "bucket," thus reducing the risk of problems in adulthood. Bones are not inert structures: they are continuously remodeling tissues, regulated by osteoblasts (builders) and osteoclasts (breakers). During childhood and adolescence, bone formation prevails, while with increasing age, bone loss can exceed formation if protective behaviors are not adopted. Calcium is the main element that makes up the skeleton, but it also plays essential roles in muscle contraction and nerve transmission. Vitamin D facilitates intestinal absorption and is formed through exposure to the sun and, to a lesser extent, also in ingested foods. Proteins, vitamins (K, C), and other minerals (magnesium, potassium, zinc, copper) also contribute to bone structure and metabolism. Calcium is particularly concentrated in only a few foods (milk and dairy products) but present in lower quantities in many others (vegetables, legumes, fish, eggs, calcium-rich water); therefore, it is important to regularly consume the main sources. A varied and balanced diet should therefore be consistently consumed, along with regular physical activity (weight-bearing exercises and outdoor play), and moderate sun exposure during the cooler hours of the day to promote vitamin D synthesis. Pay particular attention to certain life stages: during adolescence or menopause, calcium needs increase, and calcium intake should be adjusted accordingly. Building strong bones is a long-term investment; a goal that should be cultivated from childhood to achieve a good peak bone mass and thus reduce the risk of fragility in old age.
