Water storage levels in several major reservoirs are reportedly 16% to 46% below normal, raising fresh concerns for farmers across the state. In this video, we discuss the claims made by the Telangana Retired Engineers Association, which has urged the state government to immediately utilize the available water in the Pranahita-Godavari river system through the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project. According to the retired engineers, sufficient water is currently flowing in the Pranahita River, and existing pumping infrastructure at Medigadda, Annaram, Sundilla, and Kannepalli can be safely operated by maintaining the prescribed Minimum Draw Down Levels (MDDL). They argue that delaying pumping operations could worsen the situation for farmers. The engineers also presented technical calculations, stating that the pumping system has the capacity to lift nearly 3 TMC of water per day from the Kannepalli Pump House. They further claimed that even under hypothetical worst-case scenarios, the associated risks could be managed within safe operational limits. In a significant development, the retired engineers publicly offered to voluntarily assist the Telangana Government in operating the pumping system if there are technical concerns or manpower shortages. Their appeal has sparked a fresh debate over water management, irrigation policy, and the government's response during the current El Niño conditions.
