Voices from the Roof of the World | Episode 1 | Bears on the Brink

The roof of the world, a great arc of glaciated mountains in Central and South Asia, is melting quickly. From the Pamirs to the Karakorum and Himalayan mountains, the planet’s largest repository of ice outside the polar regions is in trouble. Hundreds of millions of people are directly at risk from avalanches, mudslides and desiccating pastures. Endangered snow leopards and Himalayan brown bears will definitely suffer, but so will 1.65 billion people dependent on Asia’s mightiest rivers, many of which trace their origins to the region. This episode of #VoicesFromTheRoofOfTheWorld features the impact of #climatechange and drought on the endangered Himalayan brown bears and golden marmots found in the Deosai National Park in Gilgit-Baltistan, impact on local communities in the buffer zone, human-wildlife conflict and #ecotourism. A joint initiative by the Aga Khan Development Network agencies – ‪@AKUGlobal‬, Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, ‪@agakhanfoundation2571‬ and University of Central Asia (‪@ucentralasia‬) – the 10-episode first season is produced by filmmakers from Pakistan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Nepal.
