After crossing the sheer cliffs of Rebunka Pass and Shizukari Pass, we finally enter the "Hakodate" area from the "Sapporo" region. "Shizukari" is named after the Ainu word "shitsukari" (meaning "in front of the mountain" or "dead end"), and refers to a terrain blocked by sheer cliffs like the Kohoro Coast. This difficult section of land was impossible to build a railway through during the Meiji era, which is one of the reasons why the Hakodate Main Line passes through Kutchan. On December 10, 1923 (Taisho 12), it is now a high-standard route, primarily used by express and freight trains through improved tunnels.
