In the ninth episode of Voices of Collective Health, we start with the January 2026 editorial of the journal Ciência & Saúde Coletiva, which discusses “National Pharmaceutical Assistance Policy: 20 Years in Defense of Life,” to reflect on the strategic role of pharmaceutical assistance in guaranteeing the right to health in Brazil. Created in 2004, the National Pharmaceutical Assistance Policy consolidated the understanding that access to medicines is not a commodity, but an inseparable part of the right to life. Two decades later, the policy faces new challenges related to the globalization of the pharmaceutical market, disputes over intellectual property, the incorporation of technologies into the SUS (Brazilian Unified Health System), regional inequalities, and the sustainability of the public health system. The episode features the participation of Jorge Bermudez and Silvana Nair Leite. Presented by Luanna Rocha. Jorge Bermudez is a physician, PhD in Public Health from ENSP/Fiocruz, senior researcher at Fiocruz, and one of the leading national and international figures in debates on access to medicines, intellectual property, and health sovereignty. Throughout his career, he has held strategic positions at Fiocruz, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the international initiative Unitaid. Silvana Nair Leite is a pharmacist, PhD in Public Health from USP, professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, member of the National Health Council, and full member of CONITEC. She works in the areas of public policy, pharmaceutical assistance, and social control, and is one of the editors of the January 2026 thematic edition of the journal Ciência & Saúde Coletiva. Voices of Collective Health continues to strengthen bridges between science, experience, and everyday life.
