How to fix Mk1 Mr2 5th gear pop out! Aw11 Mr2 C52 pop out. MR2 won't stay in 5th gear. A few years back during my automotive college, I took on the project of mechanically restoring a good friend's 1988 Toyota MR2. This included the transmission, which, would not stay or go into 5th gear without grinding. After reinstalling the newly rebuilt engine and transmission, that I had completely disassembled down to the 2 case halves sitting on the bench, the car wouldn't stay in 5th gear. You could physically hold it in gear, but my instructor heavily advised against it. The owner of the mr2 had decided to go ahead and try it anyway for a while, just to see how long it would last. Maybe 500 miles before grinding completely and leaving the MR2 a permanent 4 speed. Over 2 years later, with the carcass of an old Yaris C50 manual transmission, I decided to go back for round 2 to see if I could resolve this 5th gear issue once and for all. And as it turns out, a 2007 Yaris c50 5th gear is 100% compatible with the 1988 MR2 c52. As far as I know I may be the first to document this, and one day I would like to see if any other C-series manual transmission 5th gears would also work.
