More specifically, equitation can refer to a rider's position while mounted, and encompass a rider's ability to ride correctly and with effective aids. Equestrianism is a specialty within equestrian sports, and it evaluates both the rider and the horse. Such classes go by various names. Equestrianism as an Olympic sport has three disciplines: Dressage Eventing Show Jumping. Judging criteria cover the rider's performance and control of the horse, use of riding aids, appropriate attire, and usually the rider's balance factor, as well as the cleanliness and polish of the horse, rider, and equipment. The horse's performance is not judged in and of itself, as a poorly performing horse is considered a reflection of the rider's ability. A good equestrian rider is always in balance with the horse, maintains a correct position at every gait, in every movement, or over a fence, and possesses a dominant yet relaxed presence, capable of directing the horse practically without assistance. The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) is responsible for regulating the rules of equestrian competitions, as well as periodically holding competitions and events, including the World Equestrian Games. In addition to the three Olympic disciplines mentioned above, the FEI-federated sports included in the World Equestrian Games are equestrian enduro, vaulting, carriage driving, and reining.
